Single-use, reusable packaging to be able to be returned against payment in Moldova
Plastic, glass and aluminum containers serving as packaging for drinks sold in Moldova will be able to be returned against payment. The Ministry of Environment aims to reduce waste quantities and promote more environmentally responsible behavior.
The procedure of selection of the Administrator managing the deposit system for packaging has been discussed at a meeting between representatives of the Ministry of Environment and producers and sellers of bottled drinks in single-use and reusable packaging.
According to the Ministry of Environment, the deposit system involves adding an extra fee to the price of the beverage - such as those in plastic, glass and aluminum containers - and will encourage residents to return the packaging after consumption. After consumption, people will be able to return the packaging and receive back the initial amount paid.
“The goal is to change people's mindset, so that they no longer view packaging as mere waste, but as items that can be recycled and reused,” a press release by the institution reads.
The participants in the meeting established that the Administrator of the deposit system would be appointed by producers who hold at least three fifths, which is estimated at about 60 per cent of the total number of packaging units placed on market.
The system will be mandatory across the entire country, applicable to both local producers and those importing these products. Through this measure, the Ministry of Environment aims to reduce waste quantities and promote more environmentally responsible behavior.
According to the mechanism of implementation of the Packaging Deposit System, the point of return for the packaging will be organized at the seller's sales structure or in its immediate neighbourhood, not exceeding a distance of 150 meters from the sales structure and having at least the same operating hours as the sales structure.
