Shelters for Ukrainian refugees to receive grant of 12.5 million lei

Shelters for Ukrainian refugees in the Republic of Moldova will receive additional financial support amounting to about 12.5 million lei. The Government today approved an amendment to the cooperation and financing agreement between the International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies (IFRC) and the Ministry of Labour and Social Protection (MLSP).

MLSP State Secretary Dumitru Pîslaru said that through this project 11 shelters will be supported for approximately 630 Ukrainian refugees.


“The non-reimbursable grant provided by the Red Cross is being increased by about 6 million lei, and the total value of the agreement for this year reaches approximately 12.5 million lei. The funds will allow us to cover operational expenses, including utilities, staff, food and hygiene products,” the official said.


Dumitru Pîslaru thanked the partners for their continuous support and the involvement they have shown over the years.


“Through such grants we reduce pressure on the state budget and respond to the needs of the most vulnerable,” he noted.


The funding is provided under the project Support for the Operation of Shelters for Refugees and the Provision of Assistance During the Cold Season in the Republic of Moldova.

Our country has already received the first instalment worth 300,000 Swiss francs, approximately 6.5 million lei. The remaining amount is to be transferred no later than the end of the current year.

The additional funding represents a continuation of the cooperation between the IFRC and the Republic of Moldova in supporting temporary placement centers for refugees, which began in 2023. During this period, in addition to the funds stipulated in the current agreement, the IFRC has provided grants totaling 2.5 million Swiss francs.

The International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies, headquartered in Geneva, coordinates the world’s largest humanitarian network, made up of 191 National Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies and over 17 million volunteers.
