Additional 6 million lei to be provided to fund shelters for Ukrainian refugees

An additional 6 million lei will be provided to fund shelters for refugees from Ukraine. The government today approved an amendment to the Agreement on Cooperation and Funding between the International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies (IFRC) and the Ministry of Labor and Social Protection (MMPS).

MMPS Secretary General Dumitru Pîslaru noted that this project will provide support to 11 temporary shelter centers for approximately 630 Ukrainian refugees.


“The non-reimbursable grant provided by the Red Cross is being increased by about 6 million lei, bringing total value of this year's agreement to about 12.5 million lei. The funds will allow us to cover operational expenses, including utilities, staff, food and hygiene supplies,” the official said.


Dumitru Pîslaru thanked the partners for the support and commitment over the years.


“Through such grants we are easing the pressure on the state budget and meeting the needs of the most vulnerable,” he noted.


The funding is provided as part of the project Support for the Operation of Shelters for Refugees and the Provision of Assistance During the Cold Season in the Republic of Moldova.

Our country has already received the first installment worth 300,000 Swiss francs, about 6.5 million lei. The remaining amount is to be transferred no later than the end of this year.

The additional funding represents a continuation of the cooperation between the IFRC and the Republic of Moldova in supporting temporary refugee shelters, which began in 2023. During this period, in addition to the funds stipulated in the current agreement, the IFRC has provided grants totaling over 2.5 million Swiss francs.

Based in Geneva, the International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies coordinates the world’s largest humanitarian network, comprising 191 National Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies and over 17 million volunteers.
