Wine of Moldova conquers Romania: 49 wineries, over 300 wines at Moldovan Wine Festival in Bucharest

This weekend, Romania's capital, Bucharest, has become the capital of Moldovan wine. The fifth edition of the Moldovan Wine Festival brought together 49 wineries from the Republic of Moldova, presenting over 300 wines to the Romanian public – from well-known labels to new creations.

The event highlighted the diversity, authenticity, and refinement of Moldovan Wine, once again confirming its prestigious place on the world wine map. Visitors had the opportunity to discover award-winning varieties from the largest international competitions, as well as the stories of winemakers who turn tradition into art.

Andrian Digolean, state secretary of the Ministry of Agriculture and Food Industry (MAIA) of the Republic of Moldova participated in the official opening, emphasizing the importance of the event.

“Moldovan Wine is an expression of our identity. In recent years, Moldovan wines have won medals at the most important international competitions and have been appreciated by experts worldwide, and today they have been brought again to Bucharest, to be discovered and savored by you,” Digolean emphasized.

Romania remains one of the most important markets for Moldovan wines – both in terms of export value and volume delivered. The festival in Bucharest consolidates this economic and cultural connection, demonstrating that wine can be a true ambassador of friendship between the two countries. In 2024, over 10 million liters of bottled Moldovan wine reached Romania, according to the National Office of Vine and Wine. This represents approximately 20% of the total bottled wine export of the Republic of Moldova.

With a tradition of over 5,000 years in viticulture, the Republic of Moldova is increasingly asserting its brand Wine of Moldova - A Living Legend, showcasing unique tastes, native varieties, and an authentic winemaking spirit. Moldova has about 125,000 hectares of vineyards, placing it in the top 20 worldwide (alongside countries like Germany, Portugal, or Greece). About 70% of these are dedicated to quality bottled wine, with the rest for bulk wine or table grapes. Every year, Moldova produces between 1.2 and 1.5 million hectoliters of wine, ranking among the top 15–20 producers worldwide, even though it is a small country.

Moldova exports annually between 120–150 million liters of wine. Wine represents around 8–10% of the country's total exports, which is a significant global share (very few states depend so much on wine). It is among the top 10 global wine exporters per capita. In terms of export volume, Moldova usually ranks between 12th and 15th place worldwide. 80–85% of the production is exported, making wine one of the country's key national brands (alongside IT and agriculture). Romania, Poland, Czech Republic, China, and the Baltic States are top destinations. In recent years, Moldovan wine has gained ground in Western Europe and the USA, especially through rebranding (Wine of Moldova).
