Meetings at Latvian parliament to support reforms and European integration of Moldova

Meetings took place at the Latvian parliament, where Deputy Prime Minister for European Integration Cristina Gherasimov discussed Chisinau's efforts to continue the path towards the European Union and to implement reforms aimed at modernizing the country and improving the citizens' standard of living.

The Deputy Prime Minister met with Zanda Kalniņa-Lukaševica, Deputy Speaker of Latvian Parliament and co-rapporteur on the Republic of Moldova at the Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe, Ināra Mūrniece, head of the Foreign Affairs Committee, and Edmunds Cepurītis, head of the European Affairs Committee.

"I spoke with Latvian deputies about the efforts we are making in Chisinau to continue the path towards the EU and to implement the reforms aimed at modernizing the country and providing a better life for the citizens," said Cristina Gherasimov.

The Deputy Prime Minister emphasized the essential role of national parliaments in the accession process.

"National parliaments play a key role in the accession process, not only through the final ratification vote but also through the political support provided throughout the negotiations. Parliaments in candidate countries, as is our case, have a major role in transposing European legislation. Therefore, parliamentary dialogue, both internally and with the legislatures of member states, is important for advancing the European path of the Republic of Moldova," said the official.

Gherasimov is on a working visit to Riga, and met with Latvia's Minister of Foreign Affairs Baiba Braže and Latvia's representative in the General Affairs Council of the EU Council Artjoms Ursulskis. The official also had discussions with the head of the parliamentary Foreign Affairs Committee, Ināra Mūrniece, and the head of the parliamentary European Affairs Committee, Edmunds Cepurītis. During the meetings, topics were discussed regarding Latvia's support for advancing the European path of the Republic of Moldova, including the necessary reforms and bilateral cooperation in the European integration process.
