Moldova ready for 2025-2026 heating season; PM says country has certainty of security of natural gas deliveries
The implementation of preparations for the 2025-2026 heating season was reviewed at a meeting of the governmental commission for coordinating the measures of preparation for the 2025-2026 heating season, chaired by Prime Minister Dorin Recean.
‘’I want to commend the work of the teams that secured the acquisition of over 90 per cent of the natural gas needs for the next season. Thus, as of today, we have already ensured an uninterrupted supply of natural gas,’’ said Prime Minister Dorin Recean.
The Energocom stock company has already purchased about 700 million cubic meters, or over 90 per cent of the forecast consumption for the 2025-2026 gas year. Specifically, for the cold season from October 2025 to March 2026, 96 per cent of the needed quantities have been purchased. Most acquisitions were made at an indexed price, using the TTF front month (TTFFM) quotations, at 54 bidding rounds, in which 13 companies from Switzerland, Austria, Poland, Czech Republic, Romania, Bulgaria, Germany and the Netherlands participated, out of which 26 rounds concluded successfully.
As for the energy security of Moldova for the winter season, Prime Minister Dorin Recean emphasized that, in the next period, efforts of the authorities and companies in the field would focus on a few priority actions.
‘’I want everyone to mobilize, in order to accelerate the completion and coordinate the commissioning of the Vulcanesti-Chișinău power line. We should also prepare for the potential scenario related to the interruption of natural gas deliveries to the left bank of the Dniester - we already have the mechanisms in place, we have European financial assistance and we know what needs to be done,’’ the PM noted.
At the meeting, the Agency for Material Reserves informed that it had fully replenished coal stocks, and fuel oil stocks are being supplemented based on the current storage capacities.
Regarding the supply of electricity, the consumption of the right bank of the Dniester River during the October 2025 – April 2026 heating season is estimated at 2.8 billion kWh, of which 1.02 billion kWh will be covered from local sources and 1.78 billion kWh will be delivered from external sources. The annual electricity procurement procedures are to be launched by 30 September, with the prequalification of participants for the bidding process currently taking place.
‘’We should continue to promote new investments in renewable energy production, balancing capacity and cogeneration, and to identify potential barriers to the development of these projects. Additionally, I ask for the participation of everyone, including private electricity distributors, in a comprehensive programme to promote savings, as there is potential in both the public and private sectors - enterprises and individuals,’’ the prime minister added.
The members of the governmental commission for coordinating the measures of preparation for the 2025-2026 heating season also discussed support measures for the population, including providing compensations for energy invoices, as well as the necessity of continuing information campaigns aimed at promoting the rational use of energy resources.
