VIDEO // Commissioner: Moldova proved it is ready for next stage of EU accession

European Commissioner for Enlargement Marta Kos welcomed the completion of the screening stage in Moldova's joining the European Union. At the same time, she urged the authorities to continue reforms and harmonize national legislation with European standards.

According to the commissioner, the next step for Moldova is to open the first negotiation cluster, named the Fundamentals of EU membership, which will address issues such as the rule of law, good governance, and fundamental rights.

“This will boost our cooperation and accelerate Moldova's EU accession process. However, the work does not stop here. The task ahead is clear. Harness the success achieved, continue reform efforts, further harmonize national legislation with that of the EU, and continue democratic institutions. In this way, you will build the future you deserve. It is essential now to maintain this pace,” said Marta Kos.

The Republic of Moldova completed the bilateral screening process in Brussels on September 22, which began in July 2024. During the exercise, public institution experts analyzed over 100,000 pages of national legislation compared to that of the European Union.

The bilateral screening process represents a detailed analysis of national legislation compared to the acquis communautaire and is an essential stage in the EU accession negotiations. Its completion is considered a major step in the European path of the Republic of Moldova, which obtained candidate country status for accession in June 2022.
