Moldovan experts learn about European experience on biodiversity conservation during study visit to Greece

LIFE Renata project organized a study visit to Natura 2000 sites in the Central Macedonia region, Greece, offering experts and partners from the Republic of Moldova a rare opportunity for hands-on learning in ecosystem management. This initiative is part of efforts to strengthen national capacities for alignment with European Union standards on the conservation of habitats and protected species.

The visit, carried out under the guidance of the Protected Areas Management Unit of Central Macedonia, included guided tours and technical presentations in areas of exceptional ecological importance. Participants explored Axios Delta National Park and Nea Agathoupoli wetland, both critical points in the European Natura 2000 network.

The host unit’s scientific staff emphasized the importance of connectivity and integrity of the sites, while also highlighting the intense anthropogenic pressures that these ecosystems face.

"The discussions focused on innovative solutions and cooperation strategies with stakeholders, necessary to balance human activities with conservation needs. The program was complemented by practical demonstrations of habitat monitoring, biodiversity assessment, and birdwatching activities, offering an operational perspective on environmental policies. This study visit is a vital component of the LIFE Renata project, connecting theoretical knowledge with field realities. By promoting cross-border knowledge exchange, the project contributes to more efficient and better-coordinated environmental governance, preparing the Republic of Moldova for optimal management of the Emerald Network," explains the EcoContact Association.

LIFE Renata is a project co-financed by the European Union, with the main objective of supporting the Republic of Moldova in advancing the management of the Emerald Network and aligning with EU standards. The project provides legal, technical, and operational support, aiming to improve the competencies of authorities through an in-depth understanding of the EU Habitats Directives; modern methods and tools for monitoring and reporting; the creation of a knowledge hub and a high-performance GIS database; and the strengthening of species protection in existing Emerald sites.

The success of these initiatives is based on a solid partnership formed by six prestigious organizations: Lever S.A. Development Consultants (Greece) as coordinator, the Institute of Forestry Research and Management (ICAS) of Moldova, the Greek Biotope/Wetland Centre (EKBY), kartECO (Greece), EcoContact NGO (Moldova) and the Ministry of Environment of the Republic of Moldova. Together, these partners work to ensure a sustainable future and protected biodiversity in line with the highest European standards.
