VIDEO // Tax deductions of up to 20,000 lei for children’s education, professional training; Moldovan finance minister explains how people can benefit

People who have paid for their children’s education or for professional training and development courses may benefit from an annual tax deduction of up to 20,000 lei. The measure allows taxable income and, consequently, income tax to be reduced. Finance Minister Victoria Belous has made statements to this effect.

According to the official, in 2026 and 2027, citizens may deduct eligible expenses of up to 20,000 lei each year.

“This is the maximum amount that can be deducted from taxable income, not the amount you receive back. Suppose you paid 10,000 lei for your child’s education. If the legal conditions are met, you can deduct this amount from your taxable income and, as a result, pay less income tax. The actual savings depend on each person’s tax situation,” Victoria Belous said.

The minister emphasized that, in order to benefit from a tax deduction, applicants must request and retain the contract with the educational institution, invoices and other documents confirming the expenses and payment.

“Include eligible expenses when filing the ‘Individual Income Tax Return’ to benefit from the deduction. For expenses incurred in 2026, the return must be filed by the end of April 2027. Keep your invoices, confirm payments with supporting documents and file your income tax return. This way, you can benefit from the tax incentives provided by law and save money,” Victoria Belous said.

In 2025, more than 6,400 people benefited from deductions for education expenses, totaling 75.53 million lei. Starting from 2027, this measure will also be extended to expenses related to sports activities.
