Enhanced border security measures; Moldovan, Ukrainian authorities hold technical talks on implementing joint control on territory of Moldova

The authorities of Moldova and Ukraine are holding technical discussions on implementing joint control on the territory of Moldova. In the context, the Ukrainian side was presented with the draft Protocols on activities at the Criva–Mamaliga and Mirnoe–Tabaki state border crossing points.

According to the Border Police, the documents are currently being examined by Ukraine’s border authorities.

“The Protocols can be signed after the negotiations are finalized and the necessary procedures are completed by both sides. The main purpose of implementing this mechanism is to strengthen citizens’ security, streamline cross-border traffic and ensure safe and efficient conditions for crossing the state border,” the institution noted.

Presently, joint control is being carried out at the Criva–Mamaliga crossing point on the territory of Moldova, in the direction of entry into the country. At the same time, joint control is not being carried out at the Mirnoe–Tabaki post when crossing the state border.

In early October, Interior Minister Daniella Misail-Nichitin said that the authorities would strengthen protective measures at border crossing points, particularly the ones located on Ukrainian territory. The actions are being coordinated across institutions and aim to ensure the safe operation of the crossing points, as well as the protection of employees and travelers.

The official also emphasized that work was underway to arrange protective shelters so that, when necessary, Border Police and Customs Service employees, as well as citizens present at the border crossing points can be evacuated safely.

A projectile fell on October 5 in the area of the Palanca–Maiaki–Udobnoe crossing point. The object ricocheted and struck a scheduled bus that was stationary near the barrier. As a result of the incident, a Border Police employee sustained minor injuries.
