Chisinau, 16 June /MOLDPRES/ - The cabinet of ministers today approved the quantum of the premiums due to be provided to the sportspeople achieving performances at the Summer Olympic Games, the 32nd issue and the Paralympic Games, the 16th issue, which will take place in Tokyo this year, the government’s communication and protocol department has reported.

„We must stimulate, including financially, the sportspeople who are members of the national team for the Olympic Games due in Tokyo this year. I hope that this would be a strong impetus for the representatives of our national sport. We would be quite happy to see fellow countrymen on the honorary podium of winners at Olympic events,’’ acting Prime Minister Aureliu Ciocoi said.

Under the draft, the sportspeople with performances will be awarded premiums as follows: Golden Medal – 3,000,000 lei; silver medal – 2,600,000 lei; bronze medal – 2,000,000 lei; 4th place – 600,000 lei; 5th place – 600,000 lei, 6th place – 400,000 lei; 7th place – 300,000 lei; 8th place – 200,000 lei.

The draft also envisages the providing of premiums to coaches, assisting staff, physicians and masseurs. The covering of the expenses is suggested to be made from the government’s Reserve Fund.

So far, 12 Moldovan sportspeople have qualified to the Tokyo Olympic Games and  seven sportspeople have qualified for the Paralympic Games.

The Olympic Games were to take place in 2020; yet, because of the Covid-19 pandemic, the International Olympic Committee ruled to postpone the Games for the 2021 summer.
