
Foreign affairs minister says Council of Europe reliable partner of Moldova
Chisinau, 18 May /MOLDPRES/ – The Council of Europe (CoE) has been and is a reliable partner of Moldova, and a strong pillar of democracy on our continent. The Minister of Foreign Affairs and European Integration, Tudor Ulianovschi, made the statement at CoE Ministerial Session, which is held today in Elsinore, Denmark, the government’s communication and protocol department has reported.
In his address, Minister Tudor Ulianovschi addressed challenges faced by Council of Europe and European countries, also need to promote shared responsibility and values for ensuring democratic security in Europe.
The head of Moldovan diplomacy reiterated support Council of Europe has given to Moldova in its efforts to modernise and promote reforms, in particular combating corruption, increasing independence and efficiency of judiciary and enhancing media freedom, implemented through CoE Action Plan for RM 2017 – 2020. In context of the process of regulating prolonged conflicts, including Transnistrian conflict, Minister Tudor Ulianovschi pointed out the need for measures to build trust and respect for human rights, in particular, importance given by Council of Europe to situation of Latin-script schools from the Transnistrian region.
During the session, Foreign Ministers of 47 Member States approved a series of decisions on Fifth Annual Report of the Secretary-General on situation of human rights, democracy and rule of law in Europe, to strengthen protection of human rights under European Convention, in order to secure a Europe without a death penalty; reactions to new technological developments; improving coordination and activities of monitoring bodies; modernising CoE Secretariat, including its overall management and structure.
The Protocol for amendment of Convention for Protection of Individuals with regard to Automatic Processing of Personal Data (Convention/CETS 108) was also adopted and opened for signature.
