Ukrainian Center opened in Edineț
The Ukrainian Center for Education and Culture was inaugurated on 29 May in Edineț, northern Moldova. The institution provides a dedicated space for education and cultural communication and was established at the initiative of the Ukrainian side.
Ukrainian ambassador to Moldova Paun Rohovei was present at the event. It marked an important step in promoting the national, cultural, and linguistic identity of Ukrainians in northern Moldova. In his speech, Paun Rohovei emphasized the significance of the center's opening:
"This center will be, let's say, a place of Ukrainian spirit and culture. A center where visitors can get acquainted with Ukrainian culture and identity," he told Nord News.
The center will host educational, cultural, and artistic activities dedicated to promoting the Ukrainian language, preserving popular customs and traditions, and strengthening interethnic dialogue. Language courses, creative workshops, exhibitions, recitals, and community meetings will be organized.
The Ukrainian Center will bring together refugee children from Ukraine and ethnic minors from Edineț. Here, students will speak the Ukrainian language and learn more about Ukraine's culture and history.
The opening was attended by representatives of local authorities, the Bureau for Interethnic Relations, Ukrainian associations in Moldova, and members of the local community who welcomed the initiative as a gesture to strengthen cultural unity and diversity.
The inauguration of the center comes amid a complex regional context, marked by the war in Ukraine and a shared desire to uphold values such as peace, mutual respect, and cooperation.
Local authorities in Edineț have stated that they will continue to support the center's activities and cultural initiatives of minorities in the region through promoting a broad exchange of good practices and European programs between Moldova and Ukraine.
According to the 2024 census data, Ukrainians represent the second-largest ethnic group in Moldova after Moldovans/Romanians, reaching almost 5% of the country's population.
