Orthodox Christians celebrate Ascension of the Lord
Orthodox Christians today celebrate the Ascension of the Lord. The feast marks the raising into heaven of Jesus Christ, 40 days after the Resurrection, and is considered one of the most important days in the Christian calendar.
On this day, believers greet each other with “Christ is Ascended!” and respond “Truly He is Ascended!”. At the same time, in many localities, memorial services are held and the graves of the departed are tended.
On Ascension, numerous folk traditions are also preserved. It is said that the weather on this day foretells what the summer will be like, and householders go out into the fields to see the condition of the crops. In some regions, the feast is also called “Horses’ Easter”.
On May 21 and 22, in 130 localities in Moldova, the feast day of the village or town will be celebrated.
