Education week launched in Moldova; Parliament speaker says Moldova’s future depends on quality education

The third edition of Education Week today was launched in Moldova. The event aims to become a national platform dedicated to dialogue on the transformations and priorities of the educational system in the country. Present at the event, Parliament Speaker Igor Grosu said that investments in education had been unprecedented in recent years and assured that efforts to reform the system would continue, as “the country’s future depends on quality education.”

The current edition of Education Week includes 21 topic-related events, conferences, forums and interactive workshops that will bring to the forefront the most important reforms and initiatives in the education system – from digital transformation and model schools to early education, inclusion, development of future skills and career guidance. In parallel, specialized sessions will be organized for teachers, educators, university managers, physical education teachers, mentors and representatives of students’ self-governance bodies, with a focus on leadership, educational technologies, curriculum, health and inclusion.

At the opening of the Education Week, Education and Research Minister Dan Perciun said that the events organized within it represented an opportunity to discuss the main challenges facing the system.

“We are in for five days full of activities, 21 events, four thousand 12th grade graduates on Sunday at the University Fair, discussions about digitalization, about inclusion, about the modernization of higher education, about the reform of education directorates, about the multitude of processes which take place in our education system,” the minister noted.

The education minister emphasized that 2026 and 2027 would be quite challenging years for the educational system of Moldova.

“A significant share of the changes will take place over the next two years. It will be a period in which we will have a new curriculum, new textbooks, training for teaching staff, the reform of education directorates and the transfer of schools under the subordination of the Education Ministry. We also expect investment processes that must be implemented together with school principals. We will continue modernization processes and investment projects,” said Dan Perciun.

The minister stressed that, in recent years, funding for the education system had been continuously increasing. At the same time, according to data presented by Dan Perciun, in 2025 the average salary of the teaching staff exceeded the average salary on the economy. “This is the first time we have such an indicator,” the official noted.

Attending the event, Parliament Speaker Igor Grosu said that the Education Week had become an effective platform that allows for a review of the system’s achievements and the setting of goals for the future.

The official specified that unprecedented investments were being made in the field of education and that consolidated efforts were needed, in order to use them efficiently. Igor Grosu also emphasized the importance of adopting the new salary law, which will allow for an increase in teachers’ salaries, so that they are motivated and their work is properly appreciated.

“Major transformations in society begin at school, with education. In recent years, we have started important changes in the education system of our country. We are investing massively in modern schools – 90 of them will be created across the country. We are modernizing laboratories and classrooms, both in schools and universities, renovating student dormitories, investing in vocational and technical education, renewing curricula, digitalizing processes and providing support for teachers. Just today we have good news from the government – teachers who choose to teach outside Chisinau and Balti will receive increased one-time allowances upon employment. We know very well that the future of the country, literally, depends on quality education. This is a commitment that we are fulfilling gradually and with great responsibility,” said the parliament speaker.

Deputy Head of the Delegation of the European Union to Moldova Máté Csicsai emphasized that the event provided a good opportunity to analyze the progress made, assess the challenges and reaffirm a common vision for the future of education in Moldova.

“Investment in education is the most important investment any country can make. That is because it shapes people, communities, institutions and the very future of society. In the case of Moldova, education is closely connected to the country’s European path. Young people are not only those who will benefit from accession to the European Union, but also those who will shape what the European Union will look like together with Moldova in the world of tomorrow. The European Union, together with other donors, supports Moldova in this process. Together, we contribute to reforms that support teachers’ development, inclusive education, curriculum modernization, education and vocational training, as well as access for all to better learning opportunities,” the official underlined.

One of the most important moments of the week will take place on May 24 at Chisinau Arena, where more than 4,000 lyceum graduates are expected at a national university fair organized with the participation of all public universities of the country. The event is dedicated to promoting study opportunities in Moldova and encouraging young people to choose impactful careers, including the teaching profession.
