Moldovan president meets Board of Directors of European Bank for Reconstruction and Development
President Maia Sandu today in Chisinau met members of the Board of Directors of the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development (EBRD), on a visit to Moldova. The discussions focused on the reforms’ agenda, the country’s European path and the projects supported by the Bank.
The Board of Directors is the EBRD’s permanent governing body, made up of 23 directors and based in London. Each director represents a shareholder state or group of states. The Board sets the Bank’s country strategies and approves each individual investment.
During the meeting, the Moldovan president thanked the EBRD for its long-standing partnership. She noted that the Bank was the largest institutional investor of Moldova, with financing of almost 3 billion euros since the beginning of the cooperation. The sides highlighted projects in priority, such as energy security and interconnection with the European energy market, transport infrastructure and support for small and medium-sized enterprises.
The head of state underlined that accession to the European Union stayed the anchor for reforms in Moldova. Maia Sandu also emphasized the essential role of the private sector in the process of European integration.
At the same time, the president encouraged the Bank to continue supporting the private sector and to help attract foreign, especially European, investments to Moldova. For their part, EBRD representatives reconfirmed their commitment to support the country’s reform and European integration path through projects that have an impact on the economy and the standard of living.
