Moldovan President hosts President of Albania in Chișinău
Head of State Maia Sandu is today hosting in Chișinău President of the Republic of Albania Bajram Begaj, who is on an official visit to our country on 18–20 January. This is the first such visit by an Albanian head of state in more than twenty years and comes in the context of intensified bilateral relations, with both countries being candidates for accession to the European Union.
During the meeting, the two heads of state reconfirmed their firm commitment to the European path. “We live in an increasingly complex geopolitical context, marked by uncertainty and risks that affect us all. For small states like ours, belonging to the European Union is not just a development project, but also a form of protection,” emphasized Maia Sandu.
At the same time, the two leaders underlined the importance of mutual support in the accession process. “We are determined to move forward quickly and we want to learn from each other – in areas such as the rule of law, good governance, digitalization and the modernization of public administration. Each country advances based on its own merits and reforms, but solidarity among candidate states makes us stronger,” the Head of State stressed.
Regional security and the complicated geopolitical situation were another key topic of the meeting. In this regard, the two presidents stressed the importance of European unity in the face of multiple challenges.
The officials also discussed the development of bilateral relations. “There is potential for cooperation in agriculture, education, culture and tourism. There is also room to increase trade. We want closer ties between private companies, between institutions and between citizens,” noted the Head of State.
