The Republic of Moldova today received a new batch of materials provided by Romania and Poland to manage the situation caused by the pollution of the Dniester River.

According to Minister of Environment Gheorghe Hajder, the batch includes 1.5 tons of ECOSORBENT, provided by Romania, and 2 tons provided by Solidarity Fund PL in Moldova, a foundation from Poland.

“In parallel, we are in the process of purchasing additional stocks. This biodegradable material is a highly efficient ecological solution that quickly encapsulates petroleum products and heavy metals from water and soil. It also protects biodiversity, being a natural peat-based product. Likewise, the material accelerates cleanup thanks to microorganisms that naturally break down pollutants,” said Gheorghe Hajder.

Also today, the minister announced that intervention teams continue to install new protective dams, distribute the ecological absorbent material, and place absorbent pads on the surface of the Dniester River to maintain water quality.

Several localities in the north of the country, including the municipality of Bălți and the districts of Soroca, Sângerei, and Florești, were left without drinking water for several days following the pollution of the Dniester River with petroleum substances. The pollution of the Dniester was caused by the Russian attack on the Dniester Hydroelectric Complex in Ukraine on the night of March 6–7, when explosions led to the discharge of technical oils and petroleum products into the water.
