Moldovan parliament speaker, Chair of European Parliament’s Foreign Affairs Committee discuss Moldova's European path

Parliament Speaker Igor Grosu had a meeting with Chair of the European Parliament’s Committee on Foreign Affairs David McAllister, other members of the European Parliament and representatives of civil society in Brussels today. The discussions focused on the importance of democracy and the European path of Moldova.

During the meeting, Speaker Igor Grosu highlighted the country’s democratic experience over the past year, marked by three major exercises: a referendum, presidential elections and parliamentary elections.

“We spoke about the experience of Moldova, which, in a single year, went through three major democratic exercises: a referendum, presidential elections and parliamentary elections. Despite all pressures and interferences, the democratic choice of Moldovan citizens prevailed above all. This experience gave us an important lesson – democracy cannot defend itself on its own,” the speaker said.

Igor Grosu stressed that the challenges faced by Moldova and the region cannot be solved by a single country. He noted that the enlargement of the European Union should not be seen only as a technical process, but as a strategic choice regarding Europe’s future.

“For Moldova, the accession to the EU means consolidating our democratic path and contributing to a stronger and more resilient Europe,” Grosu added.

Speaker Igor Grosu is paying an official working visit to Brussels from on March 17-19, 2026, during which he has scheduled more meetings with senior European officials, in order to discuss support for the European path of Moldova.
