VIDEO // Moldova marks World Water Day
The Republic of Moldova is marking World Water Day today. In our country, the main sources of water supply for citizens are the Dniester and Prut rivers.
Minister of Environment Gheorghe Hajder urged citizens to value and protect water.
“In these days, we have all realized how important water is, not only as a resource, but as a source of life, safety, and balance. On World Water Day, we look with gratitude to those who have been on the front line on the Dniester, working tirelessly to protect people, nature, and our future. Water unites us, but it also makes us responsible. Let us value it and protect it,” stated Hajder.
In this context, the authorities are encouraging citizens to use water carefully, every day, in all activities.
“Let us preserve it for ourselves and for future generations. Whether it is about saving water in households, in industry, or in agriculture, every action counts. Through small gestures, such as turning off the tap when it is not in use, using water-efficient equipment, or choosing more economical irrigation methods, we can contribute significantly to protecting this vital resource,” the Ministry of Environment underlined.
The main water supply sources for the Republic of Moldova remain the Dniester and Prut rivers. The waters of small rivers, in addition to having very low flow rates, are polluted and heavily polluted, while groundwater (in more than 90% of cases) has a mineralization level exceeding 1.5 g/l.
According to estimates by the Agency for Geology and Mineral Resources, the total reserves of groundwater are estimated at about 3,500 m³/day. However, due to the very high mineralization of most of these resources, the reserves approved for technical and drinking water supply are estimated at only 73 m³/day.
World Water Day is marked annually on March 22. The decision to establish it was taken in December 1992 at the United Nations Conference on Environment and Development in Rio de Janeiro.
