Environmental protection at heart of public policies

The environment and green economy will become central pillars of the government program, and the new executive aims for a balanced approach between development and nature protection. Prime Minister-designate Alexandru Munteanu made the statement today.

"We have a duty to leave a clean country for future generations. We believe that access to healthy air, water, forests, and soils is a fundamental right. The prosperity and well-being of this country's people cannot come at the expense of the environment. Modernizing the economy by transitioning to a circular one will help us turn waste into resources and burdens into opportunities," he emphasized.

Munteanu mentioned that the government will focus on climate change adaptation policies, forest and water protection, and sustainable resource utilization in partnership with local authorities and with the support of the European Union.

State Secretary Gheorghe Hajder, appointed to take over as Minister of the Environment, highlighted the importance of protecting natural resources, especially water resources, considering them "one of the greatest treasures of the country."

"Water means life, health, and ecological balance. It supports agriculture, the economy, and our communities. Facing the pressures caused by climate change and human activity, the Ministry of the Environment acts firmly to protect and sustainably manage Moldova's water resources," declared Hajder.

Hajder emphasized that the institution reaffirms its mission to manage natural resources for the benefit of citizens and sustainable development through regional projects and integrated environmental policies, many of which are already underway.

Thus, the new government promises to turn environmental protection into a driver of economic modernization, focusing on energy efficiency, green innovation, and European investments.

"A European state is not defined only by infrastructure and economy, but also by its care for nature and people's quality of life. This is what we aim to build in Moldova," added Alexandru Munteanu.

According to Munteanu Cabinet's government program, the main environmental objectives include planting up to 60,000 hectares of forest by 2029 to increase forest area and combat soil erosion; rehabilitating lakes and rivers—cleaning 150 km of watercourses, restoring aquatic biodiversity, and strengthening 100 km of protective dikes; reducing waste and transitioning to a circular economy by developing the legal framework and infrastructure for waste collection, transport, and recovery; closing and reclaiming up to 300 unauthorized landfills in at least 12 districts; creating a national system for managing hazardous waste, including medical waste; implementing rainwater capture and efficient use measures.
