Republic of Moldova – European Union Summit, first after opening of accession negotiations starts today in Brussels
The Republic of Moldova and the European Union are meeting today in Brussels for the second Republic of Moldova – European Union Summit, an event that marks a new stage in our country’s European path. The meeting takes place just one week after the official opening of accession negotiations on the first cluster of chapters, Fundamental Values, on 15 June in Luxembourg.
The European Union will be represented at the highest level by the President of the European Council, António Costa, and the President of the European Commission, Ursula von der Leyen. The Republic of Moldova will be represented by President Maia Sandu.
“The leaders will discuss the next steps in the negotiations and the Republic of Moldova’s reform agenda. Both the European Commission and the European Council have confirmed that the Republic of Moldova is ready for the opening of negotiations on all clusters of chapters, as envisaged by the merit-based accession process. The summit agenda will also include topics related to the regional situation, strengthening cooperation in the fields of security and defence and energy, as well as EU support for the economic development of the Republic of Moldova,” the Presidential Office’s press release reads.
The leaders will also address issues related to security and defence, strengthening institutional resilience, energy security, diversification of supply sources, and European support for the country’s economic development.
According to the Delegation of the European Union to Chisinau, the summit is taking place in a complex regional context, marked by hybrid attacks and the effects of the Russian Federation’s war of aggression against Ukraine.
“The security and resilience of the Republic of Moldova will be at the forefront of the summit agenda on 22 June, in the context of ongoing hybrid attacks and the consequences of the war of aggression against Ukraine. The leaders will discuss deepening bilateral cooperation, strengthening energy security, diversifying sources of supply, and increasing the speed and efficiency of energy delivery,” the Delegation of the European Union in the Republic of Moldova notes.
At the end of the meeting, a joint declaration is expected to be adopted, and the leaders will hold a press conference to present the conclusions of the summit and the directions of cooperation for the coming period.
The Republic of Moldova – European Union Summit is a high-level dialogue format established by both sides and reflects the deepening of relations between Chisinau and Brussels, as well as the shared commitment to the European integration of the Republic of Moldova. The current meeting is the first organized after the official launch of accession negotiations and takes place at a time when both the European Commission and the European Council have confirmed that the Republic of Moldova is ready for the opening of negotiations on all clusters of chapters foreseen by the accession process.
The first Republic of Moldova – European Union Summit was held on 4 July 2025 in Chisinau and was considered a historic moment in relations between the Republic of Moldova and the EU. On that occasion, European leaders reconfirmed their strong support for our country’s accession to the European Union and announced the disbursement of the first tranche, worth 270 million euros, from the Growth Plan for the Republic of Moldova, estimated at 1.9 billion euros. The Brussels summit continues this strategic dialogue at a stage when the objective of the Republic of Moldova’s accession to the European Union is becoming increasingly concrete.
