HISTORICAL PHOTOS Republic of Moldova celebrates Independence Day
Chisinau, 27 August /MOLDPRES/ - The Republic of Moldova today celebrates 32 years since the proclamation of its Independence.
The Declaration of Independence was the product of the deep and vast geopolitical changes, which took place in the world in late 1990s. The implosion of the USSR and the dissolution of the Socialist camp created friendly conditions for the free self-determination of peoples.
The national liberation movement from Bessarabia of the 1988-1991 years brought to power reform-oriented forces, which set up, at the first stage, the majority in the first democratically elected parliament (1990-1994). The adoption of the Tricolor as the State Flag, the condemnation of the Molotov-Ribbentrop Pact, the Declaration of Sovereignty (23 June 1990) came next, which culminated with the Declaration of Independence.
In August 1991, following the failure of the coup d’etat by the conservative forces, the parliament convened on 27 August to decide the destiny of Moldova. On that day, the voting was preceded by a big Great National Assembly, where all citizens opted for Independence. Immediately, the Declaration of Independence was voted with the absolute majority of 278 votes. The Republic of Moldova was soon recognized by almost all states of the world and on 2 March 1992 it became full-fledged member of the United Nations.
During the anti-Communist riots from 7 April 2009, during the devastation of the parliament building, the original Declaration of Independence with the signatures of MPs was completely destroyed. In 2010, at a festive meeting, the incumbent parliament, along with the lawmakers of the first parliament established the Declaration of Independence. Three original documents are preserved at the parliament and the National Bank in conditions of maximal security.
