LIVE // Government Secretary-General: In 2027, there will be 292 city halls remaining after merging process
UPDATE // Government Secretary-General Alexei Buzu announced that of the nearly 900 city halls, 292 will remain after the merging process in 2027.
Buzu is presenting the results of the merging process today at a press conference.
The information is presented in light of the fact that town halls that had initiated voluntary merger decisions by July 31 had until September 1 to complete the process.
According to information previously provided by the authorities, 85 percent of the town halls in the Republic of Moldova had initiated, by July 31, the voluntary merger process by July 31, which amounts to 761 town halls out of a total of 890 existing town halls, or 90 percent of the town halls with a population of fewer than 3,000 residents.
The government is offering a package of incentives to town halls that have opted for voluntary amalgamation. The funds will be directed toward expanding water, sewer, gas, and street lighting networks; rehabilitating local roads; developing public transportation and digital services; managing waste; modernizing kindergartens and community centers; and supporting local economic development projects.
The local public administration reform was launched by the government in early 2026 and aims to strengthen the administrative capacity of city halls and improve public services.
