President’s message on Romanian Language Day
President of the Republic of Moldova Maia Sandu delivered a congratulatory message on Romanian Language Day, emphasizing the role of the Romanian language in preserving identity and the memory of generations.
The head of state noted that the Romanian language was preserved by our parents and grandparents even during periods marked by bans and humiliation. At the same time, the president stressed that the freedom to speak Romanian today also entails the responsibility to preserve it and pass it on to future generations.
“Romanian is part of who we are. Our parents and grandparents continued to speak it even in the harshest times, despite bans and humiliation. Thanks to them, the Romanian language has endured on this piece of land. Today we can speak it freely, without fear. All the more, we have the duty to take care of it. And, above all, to pass on to our children the love for the Romanian language, just as we received it from those who came before us. Let us leave them this precious legacy: a living language, beautifully spoken, in which they can tell their stories, sing their ballads and give voice to their longing. Happy Romanian Language Day!”
The Republic of Moldova celebrates Romanian Language Day on Monday, August 31. Officially named “Our Romanian Language” after the poem by Alexei Mateevici, the holiday has its origins in the National Renaissance period. In 1989, following pressure from tens of thousands of people gathered at the first Great National Assembly, Romanian was proclaimed the state language of the Moldavian SSR and the Latin script was reinstated.
