European Council President conveys message on Moldova's Independence Day

August 27 is a special day for the Republic of Moldova, when the country celebrates freedom, sovereignty and democracy, as well as its path towards accession to the European Union. European Council President António Costa today delivered a message to this effect, on the occasion of the 35th anniversary of the proclamation of the Independence of the Republic of Moldova.

“Congratulations, Moldova, on 35 years of Independence! It is a special day for Moldova and its citizens, on which we celebrate your freedom, sovereignty and democracy, as well as your journey towards joining the European Union. Happy Independence Day, Moldova!”, wrote the President of the European Council on the X platform.

Today, the Republic of Moldova celebrates 35 years since the proclamation of its Independence. On this occasion, Chisinau is being visited by President of Romania Nicusor Dan and President of Ukraine Volodymyr Zelenskyy.

The schedule of events dedicated to Independence Day started in the morning with flower-laying ceremonies at the Grieving Mother monument at the Eternity Memorial Complex and at the monument to Ruler Stephen the Great and Holy. In the afternoon, a military parade is held on the Great National Assembly Square. The evening will culminate with a concert featuring local artists.

Events dedicated to the 35 years of independence will take place in the capital and across the entire country throughout the day.

The Republic of Moldova proclaimed its independence on August 27, 1991, when the Parliament adopted the Declaration of Independence.
