MFA: Russia’s opening of 16 polling stations in Transnistrian region without Chisinau’s consent unacceptable

The Russian Federation’s intention to additionally open 16 polling stations in the Transnistrian region for the State Duma elections, without the consent of the constitutional authorities of the Republic of Moldova, is unacceptable and represents a violation of the country’s sovereignty and territorial integrity. The statement was made by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MFA) in a comment.

The MFA emphasizes that the Republic of Moldova recognizes the right of foreign citizens on its territory to participate in elections organized by their states of citizenship. However, the exercise of this right must be carried out with full respect for the sovereignty and territorial integrity of the Republic of Moldova.

“Electoral processes organized by foreign states on the territory of the country must be coordinated in advance with the constitutional authorities in Chisinau,” the MFA comment states.

According to the ministry, in the context of the elections for the State Duma of the Russian Federation, scheduled for September 2026, the Embassy of the Russian Federation in Chisinau coordinated with the authorities of the Republic of Moldova the opening of a single polling station, in the municipality of Chisinau.

At the same time, the Russian authorities intend to additionally open another 16 polling stations in the Transnistrian region, without the consent of the constitutional authorities of the Republic of Moldova.

“In these conditions, without the consent of the constitutional authorities of the Republic of Moldova, this is unacceptable and represents a violation of the country’s sovereignty and territorial integrity,” the MFA specifies.

The elections for the State Duma will take place between 18–20 September.
