Moldovan parliament votes on new structure, personnel strength of National Army

The parliament today voted, at a closed session, on the draft decision approving the general structure and personnel strength of the National Army. Parliament Speaker Igor Grosu has made statements to this effect.

According to the official, the draft provides for adapting the structure of Moldova’s  Armed Forces to current regional realities.

“The new structure of the Armed Forces was approved. This concerns adapting the structure of the Armed Forces of Moldova to current regional realities. The document will help strengthen the state’s defense and security capacity,” Igor Grosu said.

As for the examination of the document in a closed session, President Maia Sandu stressed that this is a normal procedure and does not constitute a cause for concern.

“A classified document must follow certain procedures. The draft is classified, because we do not want other countries, especially the ones hostile to Moldova, to learn certain details. The MPs are legally required to respect confidentiality. That is why, the parliament speaker highlighted their responsibility and the need to comply with legal provisions. There is nothing special, unusual, or concerning,” Maia Sandu noted.

The authorities announced that the draft was part of efforts to modernize and strengthen Moldova’s defense capabilities, while the situation in the region requires these processes to be accelerated.

Only the parliament members and a very limited number of employees of the legislature’s secretariat were allowed to attend the session. Lawmakers were admitted on the basis of their identification badges and were not allowed to carry electronic devices, including phones, laptops or watches.

Presently, the National Army has approximately 6,500 military personnel and 2,000 civilian employees.
