Parliament to review structure and personnel strength of National Army in closed session

President Maia Sandu described Parliament’s decision to examine in a closed session the draft resolution approving the general structure and personnel strength of the National Army as a normal procedure. The official emphasized that the document contains classified information that must not reach states hostile to the Republic of Moldova.

The head of state assured the public that the examination of the draft does not constitute cause for concern.

“It is a normal procedure. A classified document must follow certain procedures. The draft is classified because we do not want other countries, especially those hostile to the Republic of Moldova, to know certain details. Deputies are legally obliged to respect secrecy. That is why the Speaker of Parliament emphasized their responsibility and the need to comply with legal provisions. There is nothing special or unusual, nor anything that should concern us,” Maia Sandu said.

Parliament will examine today, during a plenary session, the draft resolution approving the general structure and personnel strength of the National Army. The document will be discussed in a closed session because it contains information classified as a state secret.

Speaker Igor Grosu said that the draft is part of efforts to modernize and strengthen the Republic of Moldova’s defense capabilities, while the situation in the region requires these processes to be accelerated.

Only deputies and a very limited number of employees of the Parliament’s Secretariat will be allowed to attend the session. Parliamentarians will have access upon presenting their identification cards, but they will not be allowed to bring electronic devices with them, including phones, laptops, or watches.

At present, the National Army has approximately 6,500 military personnel and 2,000 civilians.
