The first monument in the Republic of Moldova dedicated to Roma victims of Holocaust is set to be erected in Cosăuți, Soroca district. A cross marking the site of the future monument was consecrated on the banks of the Dniester, in the presence of Romania’s ambassador to the Republic of Moldova Cristian-Leon Țurcanu, representatives of the Roma community, and local and central authorities.

According to the Romanian ambassador, approximately 25,000 Roma were victims of deportations to camps and ghettos in Transnistria following the implementation of anti-Semitic legislation by the fascist regime led by Ion Antonescu. Of these, approximately 11,500 nomadic Roma, mostly women and children, were deported through Cosăuți from various regions of the Romanian territories.

“We reaffirm Romania’s firm commitment to preserving the memory of Holocaust victims, acknowledging and promoting historical truth and Holocaust education, including education about the Holocaust against the Roma, as well as combating racism, xenophobia, and all forms of discrimination,” Cristian-Leon Țurcanu said in a social media post.

The diplomat also emphasized the importance of cooperation between Romania and the Republic of Moldova in promoting European values, human dignity, and respect for diversity.

The initiative in Cosăuți is part of efforts to preserve the memory of Holocaust victims and promote education about the persecution suffered by Roma communities during World War II.
