VIDEO // Moldovan president has meeting with Romanian PM

President Maia Sandu has discussed with Romanian Prime Minister Luca Niculescu infrastructure projects connecting the two countries, economic cooperation and the strengthening of regional security. The meeting took place in Chisinau, during the Romanian prime minister’s first foreign visit.

The discussions focused on joint projects in the energy, road and railway sectors, as well as the development of bridges and border crossing points. According to Maia Sandu, the goal is to facilitate the movement of people and reduce waiting times at the border, while also ensuring safer and more affordable energy.

The head of state noted that the economies of Moldova and Romania were interconnected, with Romanian capital present on the Moldovan market and Moldovan capital present in Romania. The two countries have thousands of companies and jobs on both banks of the Prut River.

Regional security was an important topic of the meeting, amid the war launched by Russia against Ukraine. Maia Sandu said that drones and missiles violating the airspace of both countries continued to pose a threat to citizens.

The Moldovan president also condemned Russia’s attacks on civilian vessels in the Black Sea, including in Romania’s territorial waters, saying that they endanger human lives and trade in the region.

“In the context, we will intensify information sharing, early warning and cooperation, in order to implement the most effective air defense solutions,” Maia Sandu said.

Referring to Moldova’s European path, the head of state emphasized the importance of Romania’s support in the process of joining the European Union. According to her, a democratic, free Moldova anchored in the EU will remain a trusted partner and a factor of stability in the region.

At the end of the meeting, Maia Sandu thanked the Romanian prime minister for his commitment to continuing joint projects and wished him success in carrying out his mandate.
