Moldova Security Forum 2026 // Head of NATO Liaison Office in Chișinău: Moldova on front line of protecting democracy and sovereignty
The Republic of Moldova is on the front line of protecting democracy and sovereignty, being exposed to external pressure, interference, and hybrid threats, Head of the NATO Liaison Office in the Republic of Moldova Agne Gleveckaite said at the Security Forum taking place in Chișinău.
“For Moldova, these challenges are not about some distant future. Moldova is on the front line of protecting democracy and sovereignty. It is subject to external pressure and malicious interference, while the people of Moldova are not merely watching what is happening but are choosing to respond. They have chosen to respond with remarkable courage and great determination, and we have seen significant progress precisely in this area. We have seen how a democratic society can build resilience and how it can respond effectively. Your experience extends beyond the borders of the Republic of Moldova. Together, we can learn a great deal,” said Agne Gleveckaite.
According to the official, the experience of the Republic of Moldova is also relevant to other states, given that Europe’s security environment has changed profoundly. Russia’s war against Ukraine, hybrid threats, external interference, disinformation, cyberattacks, energy insecurity, and attempts to undermine trust in democratic institutions represent major challenges.
In this context, the official emphasized that the security of the Republic of Moldova cannot be separated from the resilience of its institutions and society. According to her, the capacity to respond also depends on the strength of democratic institutions, the credibility of public administration, the independence of the press, and citizens’ ability to withstand manipulation and pressure.
“It is important that you are talking about the challenges you face. Moldova is strengthening its own security and, at the same time, contributing to regional security and beyond. Continued support for Ukraine is the clearest demonstration of the Republic of Moldova’s contribution to Euro-Atlantic security. This gives us greater insight into today’s security reality. Security is not built in isolation. Our ability to address common challenges depends on our partnerships, shared experience, and commitment to working together,” the NATO official said.
The Moldova Security Forum 2026 is taking place in Chișinău on October 8–9, bringing together more than 700 participants from Moldova and both sides of the Atlantic, including politicians, military leaders, experts, and representatives of civil society and the media. The forum’s third edition is being held under the theme “Strengthening Democratic Resilience and Security through Strategic Vision and Multilateral Cooperation,” amid increasingly complex security challenges for the Republic of Moldova and the region.
