Foreign Minister at Security Forum: Moldova is stronger and more resilient than a few years ago

The Republic of Moldova is stronger and more resilient than it was a few years ago, thanks to the unity of society and the support of external partners. Minister of Foreign Affairs Mihai Popșoi made the statement at Security Forum today. The official spoke about the main security challenges facing the country and the measures taken to strengthen its defence, strategic communication and energy security capabilities.

The minister emphasized that the war in Ukraine and developments in the Black Sea region have a direct impact on the Republic of Moldova and European security. In this context, he mentioned the repeated violations of the country’s airspace and the need to strengthen its defence capabilities.

„It is no secret that our airspace has been violated more and more frequently over the past few months. At the same time, however, we are making sure that we manage to strengthen our capabilities so that we can secure our airspace,” Popșoi said.

He also spoke about the hybrid operations that the Republic of Moldova has faced in recent years, including information warfare, cyberattacks and attempts at destabilization.

„The Republic of Moldova has been on the front line when it comes to Kremlin’s hybrid operations: information warfare, cyber operations and attempts to sabotage our democratic political systems. All of these have been rejected and have failed every time,” he said.

According to Popșoi, the experience gained in managing these challenges enables the Republic of Moldova to strengthen its capabilities and share the lessons learned with its partners.

The official highlighted the role of the European Union and its member states in strengthening the security of the Republic of Moldova. He noted that the country was the first state to sign a security and defence agreement with the EU.

The minister also spoke about the support provided to the Republic of Moldova through the European Peace Facility. According to him, 120 million euros have been allocated for medium-range air defence systems, which are to be purchased.

Mihai Popșoi also mentioned the support provided by the United States in the field of energy security. This includes 130 million dollars for Gutinaș-Strășeni power line, an investment which, according to the minister, will contribute to strengthening the country’s energy security.

Regarding cooperation with the North Atlantic Alliance, he said that it must be deepened, particularly in the field of cybersecurity.

The minister also spoke about the support provided by the Republic of Moldova to Ukrainian refugees. He mentioned that the country had received a significant number of refugees relative to its population and emphasized that Russian propaganda had failed to divide society and damage relations between Moldovans and the Ukrainians who found refuge in the Republic of Moldova.

Another topic addressed was European integration. The Deputy Prime Minister said that the authorities continue to work on implementing the reforms necessary for the Republic of Moldova’s accession to the European Union.

Mihai Popșoi thanked international partners for their support to the Republic of Moldova and emphasized that the country’s resilience is the result of the joint efforts of state institutions, society and external partners.
