VIDEO // Deputy PM for reintegration says Moldova's advancement along European integration path to create sustainable, much more attractive framework for country's reintegration

Brussels has made it clear that the current “status quo” is not recognized and that Moldova’s advancement along the European integration path would create a sustainable and much more attractive framework for the country’s reintegration. Deputy Prime Minister for Reintegration Valeriu Chiveri today made statements to this effect after the government meeting.

According to the official, the message conveyed by Brussels was misinterpreted and used for propaganda by those who continue to advocate for the presence of Russian troops on the territory of Moldova.

“An illegal presence cannot become legal through the interpretation of a statement. I want to remind those who advocate for the illegal presence of Russian military forces on the national territory about the commitments made by the Russian Federation in Istanbul in 1999. I would also like to counter another falsehood: an attempt is being made to lump together the Russian military presence and its justification under the 1992 Agreement. We must understand that these are two components. The first concerns the so-called peacekeeping mission, which has become a mission of division and is not fulfilling its mandate in good faith, but is present on the territory of Moldova on the basis of that 1992 Agreement. The second component refers to the military presence of the GOTR, the Operational Group of Russian Forces, which has no legal basis. We continue to insist on the withdrawal of these forces from Moldova,” Valeriu Chiveri said.

On October 5, following the tenth meeting of the Moldova–European Union Association Council, EU foreign policy chief Kaja Kallas emphasized that “the situation in the Transnistrian region is fragile, while the current economic model is unsustainable, which means that Chișinău’s efforts toward socio-economic reintegration are very important.” The European official also stressed that “the Transnistrian region will not be an obstacle to Moldova’s accession to the European Union.”
