Vladimir Voronin steps down from leadership of Moldovan Party of Communists; Diana Caraman elected as party's president

The Party of Communists of Moldova (PCRM) has a new leadership. During the party’s 11th Congress, held in Chisinau today, delegates elected MP Diana Caraman as president of the party, thus marking Vladimir Voronin’s withdrawal from the leadership of the PCRM after more than three decades.

The congress was attended by 254 delegates from the party’s territorial organizations across the country. The delegates unanimously elected Vladimir Voronin as PCRM’s honorary president. Voronin is the party’s founder and has led it since 1993, the year of its establishment.

After the conclusion of the congress, the newly elected Central Committee convened or its first organizational meeting, during which the new party leadership was appointed. Thus, Diana Caraman was elected as president of the PCRM, while Constantin Staris and Vladimir Telnov were appointed secretaries of the Central Committee.

During the congress, delegates also approved a new version of the PCRM Programme, presented by Constantin Staris, as well as amendments and additions to the party’s Statute, proposed by Diana Caraman.

Moldova’s Party of Communists was founded in 1993, after the lifting of the ban on the activity of communist parties in the first years of Moldova’s independence. The PCRM won a parliamentary majority at the 2001 elections and governed Moldova as of 2001 till 2009, when the party’s leader, Vladimir Voronin, served as president of the country.

The party has maintained its presence in the political life of Moldova even after losing power, although its electoral influence has decreased considerably in recent years.
