Moldovan president to address the plenum of Parliamentary Assembly of Council of Europe

President Maia Sandu will deliver a speech at the opening of the winter session of the Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe (PACE), due to take place in Strasbourg on January 26-30 January, 2026.

The head of state's intervention is considered one of the key moments of the meeting. During the session, speeches will also be delivered by Armenia’s Minister of Foreign Affairs Ararat Mirzoyan and Germany’s Minister of Justice, Stephanie Hubig.

The European parliamentarians will discuss such topics such compliance with the European Convention on Human Rights, humanitarian protection in Gaza and the West Bank after the ceasefire, as well as the commemoration of the 65th anniversary of the adoption of the European Social Charter. Other topics include the International Holocaust Remembrance Day, lasting peace for Ukraine, European security, the prohibition of conversion practices and the organization of elections in times of crisis.

The session will also include the ceremony of closing of the mandate of the outgoing PACE President and the election of a new President of the Assembly.

Deputy Prime Minister, Foreign Affairs Minister Mihai Popsoi will deliver the traditional communication of the Chairmanship of the Committee of Ministers, while Secretary General of the Council of Europe Alain Berset will hold a question-and-answer session with Assembly members.

The PACE winter session brings together lawmakers from the 46 member states of the Council of Europe.
