Austria’s support for Moldova’s European path discussed in Vienna

Deputy Prime Minister, Foreign Affairs Minister Mihai Popsoi has had a meeting with Federal Minister for European and International Affairs of Austria Beate Meinl-Reisinger. The talks focused on strengthening bilateral cooperation and support for the European integration of Moldova.

According to the Foreign Affairs Ministry (MAE), the dialogue reconfirmed the steady nature of the political relations between the two states, based on solidarity and shared values. The Moldovan foreign minister thanked Austria for its support for the European path of Moldova and highlighted Austria’s role in promoting an enlargement policy based on merit, compliance with conditionalities and the consolidation of the rule of law.

Mihai Popsoi also welcomed Austria’s willingness to provide support and technical expertise in the EU accession negotiations, stressing that this partnership contributes to advancing reforms and bringing Moldova closer to the European Union.

During the meeting, the sides highlighted, that since 2004, 13 development projects had been implemented in Moldova, with a total value of 32 million euros, carried out by the Austrian Development Agency. The projects cover areas such as rural development, water and sanitation, agriculture, environmental protection, social infrastructure and energy.

At the same time, the two officials welcomed the opening of the educational institution, Austrian School Abroad (Österreichische Auslandsschule – ÖAS) in Moldova as of September 1, 2025, an investment estimated at 4 million euros. The college will offer programmes in electronics and information technologies, aiming to provide education aligned with Austrian and European standards.

The agenda of the discussions also included an exchange of opinions on the regional and security situation, in the context of current geopolitical developments. The officials reiterated the need to maintain stability, strengthen the resilience of Moldova and boost international cooperation, including through exchanges of experience, in the context of the recent hybrid attacks faced by the country.

The diplomatic relations between Moldova and Austria were established on 25 March 1992.
