Prime Minister: Moldova must maintain good relations with US, regardless of election results
The Republic of Moldova must maintain good relations with the United States of America, regardless of the election results and of which party is in power in Washington. The statement was made by Prime Minister Vasile Tofan during Cutia Neagră show on TV8, in the context of the recent US congressional elections.
The official stressed that relations with Washington are essential for the Republic of Moldova, particularly in the areas of security and energy security. According to him, our country depends heavily on American support and must make constant efforts to maintain close cooperation.
“Regardless of the elections in the US, we will always have a good relationship with Washington. That is the fate of small countries: you have to respect the major powers and maintain very good relations with them. We depend greatly on the United States on security issues, including energy security,” the prime minister said.
In this context, Vasile Tofan mentioned the $130 million grant provided by the US administration for the construction of the power line connecting the Republic of Moldova with Romania, an important project for strengthening the country’s energy security.
“Whether the Republicans are in power or the Democrats are in power, we will have a good relationship, and we must always make this effort,” the prime minister said.
At the same time,he spoke about his relationship with the US ambassador to Chișinău, stating that they had established good communication.
“At present, I can say that I have a very good personal relationship with US Ambassador Burkhalter. We both come from the business sector, and we have both found common ground,” Vasile Tofan said.
The prime minister reiterated that the Republic of Moldova is obliged to maintain good relations with Washington, regardless of political changes in the United States.
The midterm elections in the United States, held on November 3, 2026, ended with an important victory for the Democratic Party, which won majorities in both the Senate and the House of Representatives, taking control of both chambers of Congress.
