Moldova and India expand cooperation: investments, exports and new agreements on bilateral agenda

The Republic of Moldova and India aim to expand economic and sectoral cooperation, focusing on attracting investments, increasing Moldovan exports and developing new agreements in areas such as agriculture, education, healthcare and air services. The areas of cooperation were discussed during a meeting between the foreign ministers of the two countries, Mihai Popșoi and Subrahmanyam Jaishankar.

The two officials reviewed the development of Moldovan-Indian relations and emphasized the importance of the visit by President of India Droupadi Murmu to Chișinău in July. According to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the visit helped boost bilateral cooperation and expand the common agenda.

The discussions focused on trade, education, energy, agriculture, information technology and healthcare. Mihai Popșoi said that the Republic of Moldova wants to strengthen ties between business communities in the two countries and highlighted the potential of the Indian student community in Moldova.

Another objective is to attract investments from India. In this context, Moldova’s foreign minister mentioned the opportunities offered by the National Industrial Development Program and Moldova IT Park.

Chișinău is also seeking to expand exports to the Indian market, including by facilitating access for wines and other domestic products. The export of apples was presented as an example, after the Republic of Moldova was included, in February 2025, on the list of countries approved to export apples to the Indian market.

The third round of interministerial political consultations between the two countries, as well as the first meeting of the Joint Working Group on Agriculture, are expected to be organized by the end of the year.

The officials also discussed the development of the bilateral legal framework and progress on agreements under negotiation, including those in the fields of healthcare, education and air services.

Mihai Popșoi said that India is an important partner for the Republic of Moldova and that the two countries aim to make better use of the potential of bilateral cooperation.

Diplomatic relations between the Republic of Moldova and the Republic of India were established on March 20, 1992.

Deputy Prime Minister, Minister of Foreign Affairs Mihai Popșoi is paying a working visit to New York, United States, this week. The official is part of the national delegation led by Prime Minister Vasile Tofan, which is participating in the 81st session of the United Nations General Assembly and related events.
