Top 5 priorities of Moldova's Foreign Affairs Ministry in 2026: economic diplomacy, European integration, strengthening consular support for Diaspora

The Foreign Affairs Ministry (MAE) will focus its efforts on promoting economic diplomacy, with an emphasis on increasing exports, attracting investments and enhancing the well-being of citizens. European integration stays a central goal, with authorities aiming to accelerate EU accession negotiations and opening all clusters.

Another priority is strengthening consular support for Moldovans in the Diaspora, by providing more accessible services and opening new diplomatic missions. The MAE will continue to promote national culture and traditions, leveraging the recognition got within UNESCO and the tourist and wine-making potential of  Moldova.

These are the MAE's priorities for 2026, presented by Deputy Prime Minister Mihai Popsoi, in an interview with MOLDPRES.

1. Promoting economic diplomacy

One of the MAE's priorities for the coming year is promoting economic diplomacy to enhance citizens' welfare.

"This is to protect our citizens' interests and leverage the best of what our country has to provide, to promote exports and attract investments. We aim to strengthen our institutional capacities and gain as many benefits as possible from our efforts in promoting economic diplomacy. It is a priority to contribute as directly as possible to economic growth and the increase of our citizens' welfare," noted Mihai Popsoi.

2. Providing consular support to Moldovan citizens in the Diaspora

Accessibility of consular services, including at new diplomatic missions, is another MAE priority.

"We will continue to provide timely and quality consular support to our citizens. This will also occur within new diplomatic missions. We will ensure that Moldova continues to have many devoted and sincere friends, who help us when needed and rejoice in our successes," specified the minister.

 3. Highlighting national culture and traditions

Moldova has got membership in the executive board of UNESCO - the cobza has been recognized as part of the intangible cultural heritage.

"We will continue to work, so that Moldova promotes its culture, traditions and what defines us, including in the wine-making and tourism sectors. We are working to gain UNESCO’s protection. This status also offers significant economic benefits and we want to turn to good account everything that is beautiful and best in  Moldova," noted Mihai Popsoi.

4. Advancing on the path of EU integration

The Moldovan authorities aim to open the remaining three clusters shortly, so that the country can advance in all negotiation chapters.

"We aim for the opening and closing of chapters to proceed at an accelerated pace. It is an important moment; the negotiation process advances, as seen in the enlargement report published by the European Commission, where Moldova made the most progress this year compared to all candidate countries. The country's leap forward is proof of good organization and efficient work in the government. We will continue to make efforts at all levels to advance, so that we can successfully complete these processes on time," said Mihai Popsoi.

5. Consolidating the role of Moldova in European formats

The deputy PM reiterated that, at this stage, Moldova sought to be anchored in the European space, being part of European projects and programmes.

"Until the moment of accession, we want to be integrated already in a large part of the programmes and projects offered by the European Union. This is in order to gain direct benefits for our citizens both in the country and in the Diaspora," concluded Mihai Popsoi.
