VIDEO // Speaker: Thank you to citizens for defending their country through voting. Moldova impressed whole world and gave most important lesson of democracy
When the state and citizens defend their country, everyone wins. The Republic of Moldova impressed the whole world and gave the most important lesson of democracy - that even an abuser like Russia can be defeated if you fight with the strongest asset a country has - its people. This statement was made by leader of the Action and Solidarity Party (PAS) Igor Grosu, after the party obtained a majority in the future Legislative.
In his message, delivered this morning, Igor Grosu thanked the citizens who mobilized and went out to vote.
“Moldova, I bow before you! You have won battle after battle in front of enemies of the country who seemed impossible to defeat. It was an extraordinarily difficult struggle. The Russian Federation threw everything it had dirtier into the fight - tons of money, tons of lies, tons of illegalities. It used criminals to turn our whole country into a space of criminality. It filled everything with hate. We entered the fight with what we hold most sacred - people. People with their heads held high, with dignified hearts, and with much love for the nation. To you, dear people, we thank you!”, declared Igor Grosu.
The official emphasized that not only PAS won the elections, but the people did. “The people won. People who went to vote knowing it was the last battle for the future, people from institutions fulfilling their duty to the country, people from civil society, free journalists, people from various fields who contributed without asking anything in return and of whom we may never have heard. People who rose above their grievances for a great goal, people who voted consciously and honestly. Yesterday, the people won”, said Igor Grosu.
“We impressed the whole world. Moldova - a country tormented for decades - a country unknown - impressed the whole world. And we gave the most important lesson of democracy - that even an abuser like Russia can be defeated if you fight with the strongest asset a country has - its people. When the state and citizens defend their country, everyone wins. I thank all the citizens for defending their country through voting. From Drochia to Cantemir, from Ungheni to Soroca, from Italy to Germany, from every village neighborhood and every block in Chisinau! All of Europe, the whole world knows now that Moldovans are not only a hardworking people but also a fearless, clever, and dignified people. I thank the state institutions for thwarting attempts to hijack the electoral process and ensuring the will of the people was respected”, the PAS leader said.
Additionally, Igor Grosu denounced “multiple violations and abuses”, mentioning that the authorities must continue strengthening the state, “so that attempts against our democracy are no longer a threat at every election”.
He noted that in these elections, “Moldovans showed that the freedom of a nation is too great to fit into a bag of money”.
“Moldova held its head up high and rose above the sword. Moldova, be proud! And stay strong moving forward - battles will come, the work is very difficult, we have many things to resolve and many to achieve. But now we know we are prepared to build our own destiny”, concluded the PAS leader.
The PAS leader emphasized that the fundamental objective is EU membership and stressed that the transformations begun must be accelerated, with other important reforms to be launched as well.
“This is our fundamental goal - EU membership. We will provide President Maia Sandu with all the necessary parliamentary support to fulfill this goal together. Moreover, we are aware that we need to accelerate the transformations that have begun and start other complicated but necessary reforms that we were unable to implement in the first mandate. On this path, we may make mistakes sometimes, but we assure you that we will always go in the right direction - the direction chosen by you! The direction of bringing Europe home, continuing to clean up the judiciary so that the law is at the forefront, and very importantly, ensuring economic development. We commit to governing for all Moldovans. Regardless of who they voted for.
Igor Grosu conveyed a message of unity and urged citizens and political actors to work towards a common goal.
“Unfortunately, the division and hate cast in these elections were meant to divide us, to make it impossible to find a way back to each other. And my plea is to forgive each other. To think that no one else will live on this earth in our place. That we live with each other. And we will live together. If Moldova is well, all Moldovans will be well - regardless of which party they voted for. I ask you all, from all teams, from all regions, to build bridges between us and work for the common good. PAS will follow this path. We understand the responsibility and bear a great responsibility given by Moldovans”, Igor Grosu emphasized.
The Central Electoral Commission presented today the preliminary results of the parliamentary elections held on September 28. The CEC finds that the elections were conducted “in a free manner, without major incidents”. Over 1,608,000 voters turned out to vote, representing 52.2% of the voters listed on the electoral rolls.
