Moldovan parliament speaker says Transnistrian conflict must be settled in civilian format
The Transnistrian conflict must be settled in a civilian format. This can be achieved with the support of countries that respect territorial integrity and can provide guarantees for Moldova. Parliament Speaker Igor Grosu today made statements to this effect, before the parliament meeting.
The official emphasized that the current peacekeeping format was not an effective one.
“The peacekeeping format we currently have has proven to be very toxic. It has only consolidated the illegal presence of the Russian Federation on the territory of our country. Thus, the current format has turned out to be a failure and a poor decision for Moldova,” Igor Grosu said.
The speaker noted that, on issues such as “withdrawing the Russian army, which is illegally stationed on the territory of the Transnistrian region, and removing the munitions, our country will need the support of international partners.”
“We must come forward with initiatives accepted domestically, which we can then explain to our partners. On issues related to the withdrawal of the Russian army or munitions, we will need the support of international partners. We can return to these discussions after the end of the war and the signing of a peace agreement in Ukraine. We must be prepared for that moment,” Igor Grosu stressed.
At the beginning of this week, following a visit to Brussels, Deputy Prime Minister for Reintegration Valeriu Chiveri announced that the European partners were expecting a Reintegration Plan for the country on behalf of Moldova. The official also said that the authorities were working on such a document, which will not be a comprehensive one, but rather structured in modules.
