Moldovan authorities prepare impact studies after Dniester River's pollution

Environment Minister Gheorghe Hajder today presented a detailed report in parliament on the pollution of the Dniester River, stressing that the oil substances that had entered the water continue to affect the environment and public health. The official said that the authorities were preparing additional studies to assess the short- and medium-term impact.

The minister specified that the polluting substances were still present in the river and continued to damage the environment.

"This substance is still present. Damage and negative effects on the environment, including on health, are still being caused. That is why, we will continue to work," he added.

Hajder insisted on the need for a comprehensive study to determine the consequences of the pollution:

"Certainly, in the coming period, we need a study, in order to understand what the short- and medium-term impact of these oil substances is."

In conclusion, the minister gave assurances that, after the crisis is overcome, additional measures would be implemented to remedy the damage caused to the environment.

"Once we overcome this crisis, we will continue to introduce additional measures, in order to eliminate all the damage that has been caused to the environment," Hajder concluded.

The Dniester River was polluted following an attack on the Novodnistrovsk hydropower plant in Ukraine, which led to leaks of oil substances into the river.
