Moldovan president says La Francophonie one of few country's bridges to European family

We are part of the European world, united by the same values, such as freedom, solidarity and equality, as well as by a strong linguistic kinship. La Francophonie is one of our bridges to the European family. President Maia Sandu today made statements to this effect, on the occasion of the International Day of La Francophonie.

The official emphasized that European nations guaranteed the solidarity, equality, and freedom of their citizens – fundamental values of the European Union.

“Today, we celebrate the International Day of La Francophonie. A small linguistic exercise, like the example above, in which most of the words in the sentence entered modern Romanian via French, proves our cultural unity. We are part of the European world, united by the same values, such as freedom, solidarity, equality, as well as by a strong linguistic kinship. La Francophonie is one of our bridges to the European family. Happy holiday to all speakers and lovers of the French language! Bonne fête de la Francophonie!”, said Maia Sandu.

The International Day of La Francophonie is annually marked on March 20 around the world, in order to highlight the French language and Francophone culture – a global community of people and states that share this language and common values, such as peace, democracy, cultural diversity and solidarity.

In many countries, including Moldova, March 20 is marked by educational, cultural and diplomatic events that promote the French language and Francophone ties at local and international levels.

Moldova joined the Francophone Movement in 1993, and since November 1997 it has been a member of the International Organization of La Francophonie, which brings together 82 states and governments.
