VIDEO // Moldovan leadership pays tribute to heroes fallen in War for Independence
The leadership of the Republic of Moldova has paid tribute to the heroes who fell in the War for the Independence and Territorial Integrity of Moldova. President Maia Sandu, Parliament Speaker Igor Grosu and Prime Minister Vasile Tofan laid wreaths at the Grieving Mother monument at the Eternity Memorial Complex.
The Grieving Mother monument was erected in memory of the heroes who fell defending the independence and territorial integrity of Moldova.
The solemn ceremony was followed by a moment of silence and the performance of the National Anthem of the Republic of Moldova.
The event was attended by MPs, government officials, veterans of the Transnistria War, as well as representatives of the diplomatic corps accredited in Moldova.
The 1992 Transnistria War was one of the most difficult trials in the early years after the proclamation of Independence. Over 30,000 compatriots took part in the fighting to defend independence and territorial integrity and 321 people lost their lives.
The armed conflict started on March 2, 1992, and the Ceasefire Agreement was signed between Moldova and the Russian Federation on July 21, 1992.
Independence means being master in your own home, being strong in your decisions, and leaving children a worthy legacy. We must celebrate what unites us, be proud, and continue working for the independence of the Republic of Moldova. President Maia Sandu conveyed a message to this effect on the occasion of the 35th anniversary of the proclamation of Independence.
Today in Chisinau, Presidents of Romania and Ukraine, Nicusor Dan and Volodymyr Zelenskyy, are expected, invited by President Maia Sandu to take part in the events dedicated to Independence Day of the Republic of Moldova. Independence-related events will take place in the capital and across the entire country throughout the day.
