First Moldovan soldiers deployed in UNIFIL mission in Lebanon
Chisinau, August 24 /MOLDPRES/- Four soldiers of the National Army were deployed in the peacekeeping operation in the Republic of Lebanon - the United Nations Interim Force in Lebanon (UNIFIL).
During the event, the Minister of Defense, Anatolie Nosatîi, mentioned that the officers and sergeants, who passed a rigorous selection process, are professionals, dedicated to their job and trained according to international standards.
"You are the first team of soldiers to go on the peacekeeping mission in Lebanon, a new mission for the National Army. I urge you to exert maximum effort in the execution of the tasks set by the command of the Italian forces and to be interoperable with the armies of the states participating in UNIFIL, representing with honor the Republic of Moldova and the National Army in these operations", said Anatolie Nosatîi.
The decision to participate in UNIFIL was approved by Parliament in November 2021. This supports the objective of intensifying the contribution to ensuring peace through participation in international missions.
The peacekeepers will operate for six months on the mission's staff. In February 2023, the National Army is to deploy a contingent of 32 professional soldiers to UNIFIL. UNIFIL was established for the purpose of withdrawing Israeli forces from southern Lebanon and restoring international peace and security. About 10,500 soldiers from 45 countries participate in the UNIFIL mission.
