Former president of Gagauzia People's Assembly sentenced to 12 years in prison
Dmitri Constantinov, former president of Gagauzia People's Assembly was sentenced today by Comrat magistrates to 12 years in a closed-type prison.
The former official was not present at the hearing. Alongside the prison sentence, the court prohibited Constantinov from holding certain positions for five years and ordered him to pay damages of 46 million lei.
According to the investigation, between 2017 and 2020, while serving as the director of a commercial company in Comrat, Constantinov allegedly acted with others to authorize unjustified fund transfers to a company where his son was employed.
Prosecutors claim fictitious contracts were concluded, rendering Constantinov's company insolvent, with estimated damages exceeding 46 million lei.
On 14 November 2025, Dmitri Constantinov announced his resignation as president of Gagauzia People's Assembly, stating the decision was personal and due to health issues.
Constantinov's resignation coincided with the near expiration of Comrat's legislative mandate. Referring to the electoral process, Constantinov announced that elections to the People's Assembly might take place at the beginning of March 2026, following a preliminary decision by the Supreme Court of Justice and the setting of the election date by Gagauzia Central Election Commission.
