Increased interest in learning Romanian in Moldova: over 6,800 people enroll in programme launched by Education and Research Ministry

Approximately 6,800 people have enrolled in free Romanian language courses organized under the 2026–2028 National Program for Learning the Romanian Language, launched by the Education and Research Ministry (MEC).

The programme contributes to the development of language skills and facilitates the social and professional integration of participants. To carry out the courses, Romanian Language Centers have been created nationally, ensuring that the courses are organized both in person and online. Nationwide, 100 groups have been created so far and the process of setting up new groups continues based on demand.

The programme is structured according to language proficiency levels A1, A2 and B1, in line with the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages. Participants have access to printed textbooks, which can be rented at affordable costs, and upon completion of the courses, they receive a certificate attesting to the language proficiency level acquired.

The courses are meant for adults who have not studied or do not know Romanian sufficiently, representatives of national minorities, employees in the public sector and other professional fields who need to strengthen their Romanian communication skills, people returning from the Diaspora, refugees and other displaced persons temporarily or permanently settled in Moldova, as well as anyone interested in improving their level of language competence.

According to MEC’s data, at previous editions, about 25,000 beneficiaries participated in free Romanian language courses, confirming the impact and relevance of the programme.
