Moldova's Court of Appeal reduces sentence of former deputy parliament speaker from six to four years in prison

The Centru Court of Appeal has maintained the decision by the Chisinau Court on  the conviction of the former Moldovan deputy parliament speaker, Iurie Rosca, for influence peddling, but reduced the sentence duration from six to four years of imprisonment.

At the same time, the judges ruled to confiscate 227,000 U.S. dollars, equivalent in lei, for the benefit of the state, and maintained the seizure applied to the convict's assets.

According to the evidence, in December 2009, the former official allegedly demanded one million euros from the manager of a company, promising to influence the president of the Supreme Court of Justice to accept an appeal filed by that company against a decision of the Economic Court of Appeal.

The decision of the Court of Appeal is enforceable, but can be challenged at the Supreme Court of Justice within two months.

According to the Anticorruption Prosecutor's Office, the former deputy speaker of the parliament left the country before the initial sentence was pronounced, and the execution of the sentence will begin from the moment of his apprehension.
