Environment Minister Gheorghe Hajder and European Commissioner for Enlargement Marta Kos have taken part in a visit on the banks of the Dniester River, in the locality of Onitcani. At the event, the officials discussed the protection of the river, environmental cooperation and the impact of the war in Ukraine on water resources.

According to the environment minister, the meeting addressed the issue of Dniester’s pollution, caused by the Russian Federation’s military aggression against Ukraine.

“We discussed with the Commissioner the pollution of Dniester caused by Russia’s aggression, and I personally thanked her for the support provided by the European Union countries in our efforts to stop this pollution. This is what the European Union means – solidarity and support when it is needed,” said Gheorghe Hajder.

The visit also included a kayak trip on the Dniester. The two officials were caught in a torrential downpour and strong gusts of wind right at the beginning of the route, but they continued their journey.

“The heavy rain and strong wind did not stop us. We kept paddling on the Dniester with the same determination with which Moldova follows its European path: regardless of the obstacles, we move forward,” the minister said.

At the end of the visit, participants enjoyed a fish soup prepared on the bank of the Dniester and forest herbal tea.

Gheorghe Hajder emphasized that the meeting with Marta Kos had reconfirmed the European Union’s support for Moldova and the importance of cooperation in the field of environmental protection.

“We ended the day with a clear feeling that the European path of Moldova is built through honest dialogue, strong partnerships and the confidence that, when we move forward together, we can overcome any obstacle,” the minister concluded.

European Commissioner for Enlargement Marta Kos today was on the banks of the Dniester, in Onitcani, where she took part, together with Environment Minister Gheorghe Hajder, in a discussion panel on the protection of the Dniester River, water quality and European cooperation in the environmental field.

The discussions focused on identifying common solutions for protecting water resources, conserving ecosystems and sustainably managing protected natural areas, highlighting the importance of cooperation between Moldova and the European Union in the field of environmental protection.
