Moldova to accede to Hague Convention on Taking of Evidence Abroad

The government of Moldova today approved a draft law on the country's accession to the Hague Convention of March 18, 1970, on the Taking of Evidence Abroad in Civil or Commercial Matters.

According to the Minister of Justice Veronica Mihailov-Moraru, accession will allow the establishment of clear ways of cooperation with other countries and will expand possibilities for taking of evidence and the current system of letters rogatory will be improved.

Although Moldova already has bilateral treaties of legal assistance with several countries, the Hague Convention will extend the cooperation framework with countries with which there are no such agreements. This measure will strengthen the country's position in the field of international legal cooperation and will facilitate citizens' access to faster justice in cross-border cases.

The Ministry of Justice and national courts will be responsible for implementing the Convention. The document will come into effect within 60 days upon the submission of the instrument of accession to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Kingdom of the Netherlands, which acts as the depository of the Convention.
